Arsenic Trioxide Drug Information From Chemocare
Arsenic trioxide is the generic name for the trade name drug Trisenox®. In some cases, health care professionals may use the trade name Trisenox® when referring to the generic drug name Arsenic Trioxide. Drug type: Arsenic Trioxide is an anti-cancer ("antineoplastic" or "cytotoxic") chemotherapy drug. Read more here.
What Is The Use Of Arsenic Trioxide?
Arsenic trioxide is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Arsenic trioxide is used to treat a cancer of the blood and bone marrow called acute promyelocytic (pro-MYE-loe-SIT-ik) leukemia, or APL. Read more here.
How Arsenic Trioxide Is Used To Treat Leukemia
Arsenic trioxide is a chemotherapeutic agent of idiopathic function used to treat leukemia that is unresponsive to first line agents. It is suspected that arsenic trisulfide induces cancer cells to undergo apoptosis. Read more here.
Arsenic Trioxide Formation
When metallic arsenides or arsenic-containing sulfides are roasted in air, and when arsenic-containing coal is burned, arsenic trioxide is formed. The vapors condense in the flues and on the walls of the stacks as a powder commonly called “white arsenic.” Some arsenic trioxide finds its way into the air. Read more here.

How Does Arsenic Kill You?
Arsenic, consumed in large amounts, can kill a person rapidly. Consumed in smaller amounts over a long period, it can cause serious illness or a prolonged death. The main cause of arsenic poisoning worldwide is the drinking of groundwater that contains high levels of the toxin. Read more here.
How Does Arsenic Affect The Human Body?
Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water can cause cancer in the skin, lungs, bladder and kidney. It can also cause other skin changes such as thickening and pigmentation. Exposure to arsenic in the workplace by inhalation can also cause lung cancer. Read more here.
Arsenic Trioxide For Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia
Arsenic trioxide (ATO) is very potent as a single agent against acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). It is useful in new cases of relapsed APL and has been used as a remission inducer or in the consolidation phase of treatment for APL. Read more here.
Arsenic Trioxide For HIV
Our previous work found that the arsenic trioxide, clinically approved for treating acute promyelocytic leukemia, could efficiently reactivate latent provirus in CD4+T cells from HIV-1 patients and Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected macaques, without significant systemic T cell activation and inflammatory responses. In this study, we are going to study the safety of and efficacy of arsenic trioxide combined with cART in 20 HIV-1 infected patients, by observing adverse events,HIV-1 reservoir, HIV-1 load, and some immune index. Arsenic Trioxide Mechanism Of Action
The mechanism of action of Arsenic Trioxide is not completely understood. Arsenic trioxide causes morphological changes and DNA fragmentation characteristic of apoptosis in NB4 human promyelocytic leukemia cells in vitro. Arsenic trioxide also causes damage or degradation of the fusion protein PML/RAR-alpha. Read more here.
Information On Arsenic Trioxide From Wikipedia
Arsenic trioxide, sold under the brand name Trisenox among others, is an inorganic compound and medication. As an industrial chemical major uses include in the manufacture of wood preservatives, pesticides, and glass. As a medication it is used to treat a type of cancer known as acute promyelocytic leukemia. For this use it is given by injection into a vein. Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, swelling, shortness of breath, and headaches. Severe side effects may include APL differentiation syndrome and heart problems. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding may harm the baby. Arsenic trioxide has the formula As2O3. How it works in cancer is not entirely clear. Arsenic trioxide was approved for medical use in the United States in 2000. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system. Approximately 50,000 tonnes are produced a year. In the United Kingdom it costs the NHS £292 a dose as of 2018. In the United States this amount costs about US$508 as of 2019. Due to its toxicity a number of countries have regulations around its manufacture and sale. Read more here.
